Eliud Kipchoge breaks Marathon World Record

Kenya’s Olympic Champion smashed the World Record in Berlin today when he crossed the finish line at 2:01:39 taking 1 minute and 18 seconds of the previous title. Kipchoge has long been regarded as the greatest marathon runner of all time and on Saturday he sealed the deal.

Not only did he break the record he also ran from the 40km mark to the finish in 6 minutes 8 seconds, one of the fastest recorded times in a marathon. Eliud started his race with three pacers and by halfway he was down to one. Just after halfway his last pacer stopped and he ran the final 17km alone.

After the race, he remained humble and thank his family, teams and supporters for helping him achieve his dreams.

“I am grateful to those who worked with me, especially my training colleagues and my coach, Patrick Sang. And the spectators gave me strength. In the last miles, they were music in my ears.”
